City Square 162, an apartment building that offers public housing, Section 8 housing and market-rate units, has opened in Treme.

Developed by McCormack Baron Salazar in partnership with the Housing Authority of New Orleans, construction began on the $31 million, four-story building in early 2020 and was completed in July 2021. It is located at 1501 St. Louis St., on the site of a former Winn-Dixie grocery story.

The building has 76 one- and two-bedroom units. Fifteen of those are public housing, and 15 are Section 8-assisted apartments subsidized by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  The remaining 46 apartments are unsubsidized and are rented at market rates.

The units have energy-efficient appliances, high-speed internet and cable access, a news release said. The community also a fitness facility, a multi-purpose community/meeting room with a business area, and a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly greenway along North Villere Street that connects the Lafitte Greenway to the site and to the adjacent Bienville Basin community.

Residents have access to referral services, recreation and wellness programs, parenting support, tutoring, after-school and summer programs and financial support.

The Housing Authority of New Orleans acquired the site in 2014. Funding to build the units was provided by HANO, the City of New Orleans, U. S. Bancorp Community Development Corporation, Louisiana Housing Corporation and Gershman Mortgage.

The project received $1.5 million from the city and $1.7 million in public infrastructure dollars, the release said. The project also benefited from a payment in lieu of taxes arrangement approved by the Industrial Development Board.

McCormack Baron Management is the property manager for the new development. Architectural services were provided by HCI Architecture, and engineering services were provided by Schrenk Endom & Flanagan. Landis Construction was the general contractor.

City Square 162 is part of a redevelopment and revitalization plan that began with Bienville Basin, a mixed-income, mixed-use community built by HRI Properties on the site of the former Iberville Public Housing Development.
