JPMorgan Chase, the American multinational investment banking giant, will complete the 1,388-foot-tall tower in 2025. According to the architects behind the revolutionary design, it will break numerous records and become New York’s largest “all-electric” building.
The tower will hover over Midtown Manhattan and will achieve “net-zero operational emissions,” according to a joint press release from the company and architects. They will achieve this partly by using power from a hydroelectric plant.
They will be implementing energy efficiency into every corner of the new building, including triple-glazed windows, systems to reduce water usage by 40 percent, and sensors to monitor and reduce energy consumption. They will also at least double the ground-level outdoor space with a public plaza and widened sidewalks. There will be “wellness facilities” like a health and fitness center, air filtration systems, indoor greenery, and touchless technology.
Construction has already begun, and architects say that 97 percent of the building will be made from “recycled, reused or upcycled” materials from the previous building on the site. The new building is also extremely efficient with space and will also be able to have 14,000 employees, four times the capacity of the previous building.
According to New York City officials, it is estimated that 70 percent of New York’s greenhouse emissions come from buildings. Before Eric Adams became New York Mayor, former mayor Bill de Blasio passed a law to restrict the use of fossil fuels in all new residential and commercial buildings. The law required all new buildings to be constructed fully electric by 2027. It’s amazing to see companies eagerly starting this challenge and working towards a renewable future!
