Police are still searching for the man who shot dead a Goldman Sachs staffer on the New York subway on 22 May, according to reports, as his partner tells the media he was only taking the train to avoid paying for a surge-price taxi.
The Daily Mail reports that for 48-year-old Daniel Enriquez, a nine-year veteran of Goldman’s macro research team, the price of an Uber had nearly doubled to get to brunch in Williamsburg with his brother amid a heatwave.
As a result, Enriquez took the Q train from his home, and fell victim to a seemingly random attack when a gunman — who police sources have named to the Mail as Andrew Abdullah — opened fire on a subway carriage just before 11.45am.
Abudullah remains at large, the paper reports.
Speaking to the Mail, Enriquez’s partner Adam Pollack said Enriquez rarely took the train, but opted to use the subway in lieu of a taxi as demand and prices surged when temperatures hit 90 degrees.
In a statement to the Mail, Goldman chief executive David Solomon said Enriquez “epitomised our culture of collaboration and excellence”.
“We are devastated by this senseless tragedy and our deepest sympathies are with Dan’s family at this difficult time,” he told the paper.
