The New York Times today announced a series of hybrid and virtual events running from June to November, inviting audiences to engage with climate solutions and hear from inspiring environmental leaders, as part of a global event program which seeks to expose tensions in the climate debate and bring diverse perspectives to the stage.
The Climate Forward Conversations will feature three signature events to take place live and online from London, New York and Sharm el-Sheikh, organized across three program streams. Revealing Realities brings journalists from The New York Times face to face with audiences to share expert climate analysis and stories from communities on the frontline of climate change, together with the diverse experiences of scientists and innovators. Applying Solutions will surface bold ideas, roadmaps and agendas from climate leaders for tackling the climate crisis, and Inspiring Action will bring individual voices, environmental campaigners, artists and creators to the fore of each event.
The first of the series, to be held in London later this month, will feature speakers including Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London; Nigel Topping, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP26; Elizabeth Wathuti, activist and founder of the Green Generation Initiative and Wangari Maathai Foundation; Farhana Yamin, lawyer and climate activist; Alexandra Palt, Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer of L’Oréal and Francois Gemenne Director of the Hugo Observatory.
Hannah Fairfield, climate editor for The New York Times said the events would provide a forum for Times journalists to share critical reporting and insights, and developments in public policy, technology, innovation and politics.
“This series of live conversations will allow us to build on the momentum from audiences at The New York Times Climate Hub last November, by bringing the full spectrum of coverage from our climate report and newsletter once more to the stage. Our readers see firsthand the inequalities and social impact caused by climate change: on migration and urban planning and on those living in areas across the world already experiencing the devastating effects of wildfires, drought, extreme heat and rising sea levels.
“There’s a crucial role for journalism to help explain the abstraction of climate science in the pages of our report through storytelling and the theater of live events, and we look forward to audiences joining us in the room and online for these important discussions.”
A standalone, one-day event focused on live performance and technology, A New Climate, will be held in San Francisco, exploring the ways tech leaders and artists are using creativity to inspire change.
A New Climate will invite audiences to find inspiration from live music, storytelling and art. Attendees can participate in cross-disciplinary conversations, and see how creators and tech innovators are bringing fresh thinking to the climate challenge.
