It was part of a multi-day celebration of women’s sports, with the panel discussion and community events taking place in advance of the WNBA game between the Connecticut Sun and Indiana Fever played in front of a sold-out crowd at Boston’s TD Garden.
For Jennie, perhaps the most important lesson she learned from her athletic career at Princeton wasn’t the strategy of winning. It was how to handle unexpected events such as when she was sidelined during her freshman year with a broken foot.
“My whole identity had been soccer, and I had to show up on the sidelines,” she explained. “It was devastating and very humbling. I needed to figure out how to be a supporter from the sidelines to encourage my teammates and impact the culture of the team, even though I wasn’t on the field.”
For Jennie, that’s a lesson that has lasted a lifetime.
“So much of what we do as leaders and in our jobs and in corporate America is to figure out how you build culture, how you get the best out of everybody, and how to stay flexible so you’re ready to pivot when the time comes to make a sudden change,” she said.
