Opinion | Northcrest Ward: Peterborough urban farm hosts fruit-tree planting sessions – The Peterborough Examiner

Written by Amanda

GreenUP and Nourish, with support from the Community Fruit Group, are hosting four fruit tree planting and skill sharing events to establish mini food forests in local neighbourhood parks and community gardens, and community members are invited to participate.

In Northcrest Ward the planting takes place Sept. 26, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Ptbo/Nogo Urban Farm, located at Christ Lutheran Church, 463 Highland Rd.

The event includes the following itinerary: sign in at 4 p.m.; welcome, introductions and details on the Urban Farm Project at 4:10 p.m.; mini workshop on pruning at 4:20 p.m.; planting time at 4:35 p.m.; and tidy up at 5:30 p.m.

During the planting time, there will be a brief safety reminder and instructions on how to plant the trees, followed by the planting, watering, painting the trunks, mulching, putting on tree guards, labelling the tree, and installing signs with project details and how to get involved. During the tidying time participants will learn about when to water, how to prepare for winter and when to do spring pruning.

Other planting and skill sharing sessions will take place at St. Luke’s Community Garden, Sept. 19 (young fruit tree care), Keith Wightman Park, Sept. 20 (pruning basics), and Reid/McDonnel Park, Sept. 27 (preserving fruits). Depending on the location, plantings will include five fruit trees (mostly apple varieties), berry bushes, kiwi vines and an assortment of perennials. This project is made possible by partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation and TD Bank.

Planting sessions take place rain or shine, but if there is thunder and lightning they will be rescheduled.
