Police arrested a second suspect on Wednesday in the brutal murder of Willis Onyango Ayieko, a Wells Fargo manager.

The latest arrest follows a dramatic gunfight near Siaya Town in which officers managed to recover Ayieko’s stolen firearm from the woman in custody, though her boyfriend, identified as the main suspect, escaped with injuries.

According to police reports, officers confronted the suspects, who were travelling in a salon car on the outskirts of Siaya early Wednesday morning. When the suspects resisted, a gunfight ensued, leaving bloodstains at the scene—evidence that the boyfriend sustained gunshot wounds during his escape.

The pistol recovered from the scene, confirmed as Ayieko’s licensed firearm, was found without bullets.

“We believe the main suspect escaped with gunshot wounds, and we appeal to local health facilities that may attend to such a case to report it immediately,” said a police officer close to the investigation.

Following the shootout, law enforcement officers quickly set up roadblocks on major routes leading in and out of Siaya to tighten the net on the escaping suspect. The woman arrested during the clash has been taken into custody for interrogation, with police focusing on uncovering the full extent of her involvement in Ayieko’s murder.

This arrest marks the second since the investigation began, with the first suspect apprehended on Monday in Nairobi’s Dandora area. A multi-agency team carried out the arrest, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) leading the forensic investigation.’

“The suspect was flushed out of his hideout in Nairobi’s Dandora Phase IV Monday night, where he had rented a house using proceeds of the heinous crime,” police reported.

Forensic evidence placed the first suspect at the crime scene, and police indicate he is an ex-convict from Khwisero, a neighbouring area of Siaya.

Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor conducted an autopsy at Lee Funeral Home, revealing the grim details of Ayieko’s death. The examination concluded that Ayieko died from blunt force trauma to the head, which led to fatal bleeding in the brain. Dr. Oduor noted additional bruises on the victim’s wrists, likely caused by cuffs, as well as missing tissues on his face and mouth.

“There was bleeding to the brain, and other than that, there were bruises on the wrists caused by some cuffs found on him,” Dr Oduor stated, further explaining that the missing tissue was likely due to animal predation, given that Ayieko’s body was found in a stream.

The recovered pistol, along with Ayieko’s missing valuables, plays a critical role in the ongoing investigation. Police are hopeful that new evidence will lead to further arrests of accomplices and provide closure for Ayieko’s family.

On October 21, a student reported Ayieko missing, and two days later, on October 23, a student discovered his decomposed body in the Mungowere stream. His murder has left a trail of grief and concern, with Siaya residents and public officials demanding justice.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has pledged to pursue every lead. “The autopsy findings will form the basis of the case detectives are preparing,” said Martin Nyuguto, Director of DCI’s homicide unit.
